Ambiguity and uncertainty can significantly impact organizational transformation
Instinctively, we fear the unknown. Therefore, when faced with uncertainty, “whether it is on a macro level such as global geopolitical, health, or economic crises, or on a micro level such as job prospects, or career choices” may be stressful and exhausting. However, it is important to remember that uncertainty and opportunity are two sides of the same coin.
Ambiguity does not have to hinder our progress. Over the past decade, we have studied innovators and conducted extensive research on ambiguity tolerance. The findings are clear: “We all have the ability to effectively manage uncertainty, confidently venture into the unknown, and seize potential opportunities.”
Look at the situation from a different perspective
One effective approach is the concept of the “infinite game” coined by New York University professor James P. Carse. This approach encourages us not to assume that the rules, boundaries, and purpose of your current “game” (such as your job, assigned projects, or chosen career path) are fixed. If you do so, you will only focus on winning or losing and increase your stress due to existing uncertainty. On the other hand, “infinite gamers” recognize surprise and new possibilities as integral parts of the game; they challenge existing roles and parameters.
Prepare yourself for new risks
Preparing yourself for new risks is another crucial step in dealing with uncertainty. This involves identifying risks that genuinely interest us or avoiding those that do not align with our goals. Additionally, increasing our risk tolerance by taking smaller risks in unrelated areas is equally important.
Take action
Taking action is vital in facing ambiguity. Each step we take provides us with valuable experiences. Research by Timothy Att and Kathleen Eisenhart suggests that great achievements are not caused from major actions alone but from a series of small steps. Starting off gradually improves outcomes while reducing anxiety associated with trying not to do everything at once.
Endurance is essential
Enduring hits and bouncing back. But there is an even more critical principle:
Learning how to turn uncertainty into opportunity. Embracing new opportunities requires stepping through the door of the unknown. If you believe in your abilities, this process will be less daunting. We hope that these recommendations will help you develop a better relationship with transformation and inspire others to follow suit.
